Eeeek and aaack…

July 28, 2008

are the words I’m most often muttering these days. This is the time of summer when I realize how little time is actually left and how many summer goals so gleefully made in June are still woefully undone in July.

How come when you’re 9, summer lasts for sooooo long, but when you’re 39, it’s just a watermelon seed spitting distance long and then, done?

I know part of it is that school seems to start earlier now than it used to. Although I don’t know how that’s possible. It seems like about 180 days has always been some sort of requisite. Plus, I homeschool. I don’t have to plan my days around when the buses start running again.

Maybe I should blame it on the commercialism. They put patio furniture out for sale in April and by July 10th it’s all in closeout so they can make room for the back to school shenanigans of August 1st. It’s such pressure seeing those rows and rows of glue sticks and portfolios and Trapper Keepers and Sharpie pens.

And what kid uses Sharpie pens in class these days? I was all about the Erasermate erasing ink thing. I made a lot of mistakes (holler, “Perfectionist!”) and had the smears to show for it.

Cruising the aisles for notebooks and pencils and bubble gum pink erasers. Eeek and ack! I just showed up here to buy some cream of chicken soup, what’s going on?

I try to buy a few deals and think ahead to next year and what we might possibly use because the single composition notebooks are only a nickel apiece, people! So who’s actually turning the clock forward faster? Next year? Do I really want to store fifteen single composition notebooks for a year?

Apparently so. They’re at home, stacked neatly on the shelves. I have no defense at all.

Eeek and ack. Still muttering.

LOL! How CAN one turn down 5 cent notebooks?!?!?
I have my own secret stash and only the knowledge of DH’s well-deserved sigh keeps me from running out and buying more.

AAAAAACCCCCCHHHHHH!!!! I try to avoid the back to school aisle because I always end up buying more of what we already have at home. 64 box of crayons? Our crayons at home have dull heads, so we’ll get new ones!! Markers? Oh, they have skinny ones and smelly ones and pretty flesh toned ones, I’ll get them all! Not to mention we have a bucket (yes a bucket, but it is small) of various markers from various projects at home.

The one thing I can never find on sale are those little weekly planners, they are always like $15.

Eeeek and aaack… my sentiments exactly. Where is summer going, and why is everyone in such a hurry for it to be gone?

We also have SO much to do before school starts. I dread the school supply shopping trip.

Then there’s the annual eye exam for FavoriteSon, the physicals, the shots, the shoe buying, the haircuts, the . . .

    eek.
