Almost three months ago…

May 22, 2008

I was invited by a friend to attend a Steven Curtis Chapman concert at her church.  It was a very blessed time.  He has been one of my favorite Christian artists for many years.

After the concert I told my friend that I was surprised by how much talking he had done versus singing.  And the content of all his talking was that of his girls and their antics.  He told a hilarious story about bath time where the girls popped out of the bath while he wasn’t looking only to appear dressed in head to toe princess costumes.  Proud papa doesn’t begin to describe this man’s attitude towards fathering.

Also performing with him were his two sons.  He displayed obvious joy and pleasure at the privilege of having his sons accompany him on tour and share their musical gifts as well. They were absolutely a talented trio, having fun together praising the Lord.

In light of the tragedy that has hit the Chapman family, I grieve with them for their loss, and pray that all they have learned in the Light of God’s Word will be their solace in this darkness.  Truly may the body of believers hold them before the Father who is still sovereign in all things.

I wonder how SCC’s concerts will change in light of all that’s happened the last few days. Part of me is glad you got to see him before all this happened. I think both he and his wife will look back on the last few years as some of the happiest of their lives. Surely, God can and will redeem this pain. But the scars do change us.

This has been such terrible news…one that causes us pain, so I can’t imagine what it has done to the family. But, the comforting news is that we mourn the loss, but we do it with hope…not as those that have no hope. I cling to that hope in faith. What else can we do?
